Senior Margo Simms has won a silver key, giving her the opportunity to display her work at the Feb. 23 Scholastics Art Award Regional 2008 Exhibition. The implications of this win extend beyond receiving temporary recognition for her work according to Simms.

“(Winning this award) affects how you get accepted or looked at as an artist,” Simms said. This is not her first time in the competition, according to Simms. However, she said she was hoping for a gold key this year, although she is pleased with being awarded a silver key.

Jennifer Davis, art department chairperson, said that the ceremony begins at 3 p.m. at IUPUI Herron School of Art, where the art will be displayed.

For the nine students here who received gold keys, their journey does not end at Herron. “The nine gold key award winners from here will have their work go on to compete at the nationals which is usually held in late March in New York,” Davis said.

Davis said that these competitions drive students to work for a different end. “Students in my class are driven to want to create something that will do well at Scholastics and create professional looking pieces in hopes of gaining an award at the regional or even national level,” he said

Simms said her awards are going to help her pursue her education as an artist. “The more awards you win, the better chance for scholarships,” Simms said.
