WHJE places first in IASB competition

March 11, 2008

The radio staff here, WHJE, placed first in the High School Broadcasting Competition and Conference held by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters (IASB) on March 10 at the University of Indianapolis. The competition is held once a year, and according to radio teacher Brian Spilbeler, the last time Carmel placed first was in 2003.

Twenty-nine member schools from all over Indiana participated. Forty broadcasting professionals judged at the competition. The competition lasted the whole day at the University of Indianapolis. In the morning, students could attend helpful workshops on different categories of radio and television broadcasting. In the afternoon, students attended the awards ceremony, where the entries were judged and announced.

There are 11 categories that are judged in the IASB radio competition: air personality, news anchor, copywriting, interview, sportscast, spot production, imaging, in-depth, drama or skit, play-by-play asketball and play-by-play football. Three of the categories, news anchor, copywriting and air personality, are judged live during the competition in the morning. The other categories require submitted entries.

The radio staff submitted their entries three weeks before the competition. Spilbeler said that the entire competition had about 300 submitted entries. “All of the different elements are already used on a regular basis in our classes,” Spilbeler said, “so all we had to do to prepare was to submit the best work we’ve done this year.”

Categories Carmel placed in:

Radio Sportscast: Pat Boylan placed second
Imaging: Kyle Binder placed first
