Empty Bowls event puts art

The art department is participating in “Empty Bowls” this Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at North Central High School.

“Empty Bowls” is a fund-raising event in which all the MIC schools participate. “Each of the schools is asked to donate around 200 bowls, and people pay about $5 to attend, pick a bowl that has been handmade by a high school student and fill it with chili or soup. At the end they get to keep their bowl,” said art department chairperson Jennifer Davis.

“This is the sixth or seventh year that ‘Empty Bowls’ has been going on,” Davis said. In the past the money raised from the event has been given to charities such as Ronald McDonald House.

Joyce Uland, member of art club and sophomore, has been assisting in her own way to make the event possible. Along with the other members of the art club, Uland has been glazing many of the bowls that were made last school year, so they can be donated to the event.

Since Uland has taken ceramics classes throughout middle school and high school, she said she believes one of her own bowls will be used in the event.

“It is cool knowing that people out there are eating from the bowls that you had fun making,” Uland said.

Central Park hosts fall festival

After hearing about the Fall Festival at the Monon Center at Central Park, sophomore Hilary Deardorff said she would like to go. “I’d hang out with friends and stuff. The hay ride sounds fun,” Deardorff said.

The festival is Oct 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. “It’s basically going to be like a little carnival,” Lindsay Holajter, marketing coordinator for Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation (CCPR), said. There will be games like Mummy Bowling for kids, as well as concessions and entertainment for the whole family.

According to Holajter, if a family brings in five non-perishable items, the family will get in free. Otherwise, cost is $5 per person. Further information on the event is available online at www.carmelclayparks.com.

Holajter said, “It’s a new event held at Central Park, and we’re helping to get the public aware of what all Central Park is and what activities can be held there.” She said this is important for a new facility. Deardorff said the event sounds promising.

“(The festival) shows people that Carmel wants to celebrate a new season,” Deardorff said. “It shows that Carmel cares and wants to celebrate.”

CHS Angels Club makes preparations

This Tuesday, the CHS Angels Club will allow club members to sign up for the upcoming bake sale to benefit their newest project, Operation Christmas Child.

For this activity, money raised from the bake sale will be used to purchase small toys, school supplies, hygiene products, hard candy and wrapping paper so club members can create shoeboxes filled with these items to send to children in need.

Operation Christmas Child is arranged by Samaritan’s Purse, an Evangelical Christian relief organization that provides relief to people worldwide.

Near the end of November, CHS Angels Club members plan to drop off the shoeboxes they have filled at Heritage Christian, where Samaritan’s Purse will then send them off to various countries where children in need will receive them.

Kati Feller, CHS Angels Club copresident and sophomore, said, “This may be the only gift these kids receive their entire life.”

Team closes successful season, begins building for next season

The women’s junior varsity soccer team closed its nearly undefeated season last Saturday with a win over Cathedral. The team will now cheer on the varsity team on its journey to State.

The JV team boasts an impressive 14-0-1 record, the only non-win being a tie against Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 29. “I think we did really well, and I always thought we’d end up where we did,” Taylor Fisher, JV soccer player and sophomore, said. “We won most of our games, which is really good. The season went by really fast, and it was fun.”

Now the team is looking ahead to next year’s JV and varsity seasons. Though Fisher said she enjoyed playing soccer for Carmel the past two seasons, she does not plan on trying out as a junior because it was too much combined with her orchestra commitments.

Fisher also said she believes any of the girls currently on her junior varsity team have a chance to make varsity. Head Coach Julie Faas, who plans her JV practices so that much of the time is spent scrimmaging the varsity, said she does this so “they see that with hard work they have a chance to play varsity.”
