Publications earn awards at national convention

The 2008-09 Carmel High School HiLite won first place in the Best of Show competition for newspapers of 17 or more pages this year at the annual fall national high school journalism convention sponsored by the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). Additionally, the HiLite Online, the newspaper’s Web site, earned a second place Best of Show award, and the topically-based Acumen news magazine finished sixth in the category of newspaper special edition. The 2008 Pinnacle yearbook placed sixth in the category of books over 325 pages. The awards were announced on Nov. 15 at the St. Louis convention, which was attended by more than 5,000 journalism students from around the country.

Carmel students who attended the convention were Kati Feller, Juila Schiffman, Maris Schiess and Jinny Zhang.

The current editor in chief of the HiLite is Amy Flis. Brittani Wheeler and Cathy Chen are the managing editors. Ariel Aisen is the editor of the Acumen.
